High level of pedophilia in Albania should be treated as 'national shame', sociologist says

The well-known sociologist Gëzim Tushi says in an interview to Euronews Albania that sexual harassment or abuse of minors occurs for various reasons.

Present in the studio "Ilva Now", Mr. Tushi said that one of the problems that Albanian families have is the lack of communication with their children.

According to him, the task of parents is to teach children the culture of denunciation if they notice that they are "victims" of sexual harassment.

"The phenomenon and causes are complex. Albania has had the phenomenon of pedophilia less often, as the children have been more protected. There is a decline in fundamental security structures. "If the family does not speak and does not keep close the kids, to children should be taught the culture of denunciation," he said.

He was also critical of schools, saying that the schools do not talk enough about sexuality issues.

"Must be spoken about the sexuality on schools. We still have taboos and this lack of education from two institutions such as school and family, I guarantee you that we will have seen such cases, because we can not put police officers behind every child. "We need to teach children to build a protective dam to understand when they are threatened," he said.

For the sociologist Gëzim Tushi, a high level of pedophilia should be treated as "national shame", while criticizing state institutions with the argument they have not done enough to prevent sexual assault.

"This high level of pedophilia is a national shame. We want a civic reaction, there were hundreds of them, it was a massiveness and it was a civic reaction. It produced social pressure. The case of the girl [Rrëshen] who was raped should be turned into an alarming issue," he said.
