The speedboat with marijuana in Brindisi |
The European border control police, FRONTEX, said that during a helicopter routine control in the maritime space between Albania and Italy, they discovered a speedboat in which about 400 kilograms of marijuana were found.
According to Frontex, the 6-meter-long raft was pursued by the Italian coast guard as it sailed rapidly towards the southern coast of Italy in Brindisi.
According to Italian police if the drugs ended up in the criminal market it would be worth about $ 5 million. Albanian police said that they had cooperated for this operation and that according to them, the detained driver of the speedboat, a 30-year-old from Vlora, has been identified.
Albania renewed in March this year an agreement with FRONTEX on cooperation in border protection while it was the first country in the Western Balkans to sign with the European Union in 2019, the Status Agreement for joint Frontex operations with the Albanian border forces.
