Albanian police fine over 250 drivers for wrong overtaking, tourism increases accidents

The increased flow of traffic after the start of the tourist season in some cities of Albania this weekend has prompted the police to increase patrols on the roads in order to prevent potential accidents.

As announced on Sunday evening, police fined 256 drivers in the evening hours for erroneous overtaking, while temporarily suspending the licenses of 43 others for speeding violations and drunk driving.

The movement of thousands of citizens from Albania and Kosovo towards the tourist areas of the coast such as Durrës or the southern Riviera makes on Sunday afternoon heavy traffic, especially on the access roads to Tirana and "Rruga e Kombit".

To prevent any possible danger and blockage, the police said that they had deployed additional staff at the entrance of the capital, Elbasan, and Durrës with "11 traffic police sectors".

Hundreds of people have been fined while a 55-year-old (initials B.B.) was arrested for driving a drunk his taxi.

Police appealed to citizens to be careful by avoiding roads that create traffic, to maintain calm in driving, and not to perform wrong overtaking in order to cross the carriageway.

"[…] Traffic police services are monitoring your behavior on the road," police said in a statement.

With the increase of traffic during the summer months, the accidents increase significantly and the number of deaths also.
