Marko Kepi was spending his Sunday working on his campaign as a Mid-Island City Council candidate when he came across a person who was committing theft.
A person had gotten into a car, picked up a bag and left running. Kepi and the others began to follow him. "He tried to run away from me but I grabbed him and grabbed his bag. "I told him: 'You are not going anywhere until the police come,'" Cape told US media.
It is worth noting that the maneuver of the Albanian candidate for the New York City Council was not a spontaneous action. Kepi is a trained marine who was part of the United States Marine Corp.
The thief was identified by police as the 21-year-old Amir Asep and the bags he robbed belonged to Kepi's fiancée, Era Kovanxhi. But for the Albanian-American, the bag that contained only her wallet and personal belongings was not a concern, but the fact that the thief had no problem committing this crime in the middle of the day and in front of many people.
Asep meanwhile had criminal precedents again for robbery.
"I think people understand what police officers go through, especially when their hands are tied by the law. This gives the criminals a lot of rights, it is almost meaningless to arrest them because you will be right", said Kepi, adding that Asep told him the same thing when he was arrested.
