Democratic Party presidential candidate Agron Shehaj says that after the meeting he had with the US ambassador to Albania, Yuri Kim, he was attacked on social networks by certain people working for the Democratic Party, who according to him have a completely anti-American stance.
He gave details about the meeting and conversations he had with the chief diplomat of the United States of America, Yuri Kim.
"The ambassador was interested in my candidacy and we discussed this and other political issues. There has been a lot of reaction in fact, there has been criticism, there have also been attacks. There has been criticism, because in reality many Democrats have been hurt by the State Department for declaring "non grata" Mr. Berisha and it is understandable. There have been attacks on social networks, through some mechanisms that were used during the election campaign and are now being used against me. There are certain individuals who work… There are Democrats who have spontaneously reacted to the State Department (SD) decision, but on the other hand there have been attacks that have exploited this anger from certain individuals who work for the Democratic Party, who have recently started working with 'clearly anti-American approach', Shehaj said in the studio of "Ilva Now" in Euronews Albania.
Journalist Ilva Tare asked Mr. Shehaj how she would comment on the decision of SD for declaring "non grata" of former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, the candidate for chairman of the Democratic Party made this comment:
"I have expressed my position, my appreciation for the leader of the Democratic Party and the contribution he has given to the western orientation of Albania. This is a serious decision, that Mr. Berisha has decided to face it individually and it is not up to me to give an opinion on the decision of SD. The Democratic Party should not in any way jeopardize the relations and friendships it has with the United States, the future of Albania and the Democratic Party can not be, except on the side of the United States of America", said Shehaj.
Among other topics, Mr. Shehaj said that during the meetings with the structures and branches of the Democratic Party he sees the increased commitment of the members, but also a curiosity about the platform that he has revealed for the June 13 race.
He said he would have liked more time available for the race, but anyway Mr. Shehaj added that he will try to meet over 90% of the party structures in the country.
