Albanian army at war with fires, thousands of hectares burned

Albanian Military officials pulled out troops and equipment to help put out fires that have engulfed the country due to high temperatures and arson suspected to be intentional.

The Ministry of Defense announced that about 500 members of the Armed Forces, 50 vehicles, 3 helicopters, firefighters and ambulances have been engaged since the early hours of the morning in the operation to extinguish the flames on the Karaburun peninsula in Vlora.

Minister Niko Peleshi considered as serious the situation in Karaburun, while the flames continued to be active during the night, becoming a danger to the residents of the village of Dukat in Vlora.


While working to extinguish the fire in the Dukat area, other military troops were transported by helicopter to the 'neck' of Sheriku in Karaburun, at an altitude of 1200 m above sea level in order to neutralize the fires there that are a threat to Llogara Park.

The action, as announced by the Ministry of Defense, has been going on for hours from the ground and from the air.

Also of concern is the fires in the north of Albania where there are active hearths.

In the village of Cukal of the administrative unit Shllak in the municipality of Vau i Dejës near Shkodra, a fire broke out in an area with various shrubs and trees.

The local service is at the scene and is working to extinguish the flames.

Firefighters are fighting in the village of Qesorat, of the Lunxhëri administrative unit in the municipality of Gjirokastra.

In this village, 20 soldiers of the Armed Forces have been brought to the aid of the local authorities and the fire service.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Edi Rama said that "the several-day commitment to extinguish the fires in Karaburun and not only, by the Army Forces and Rangers troops on the ground deserve respect and encouragement, at a time when many countries are facing the threat of fires."
