In an interview with VOA's Afghan service, Prime Minister Edi Rama said that Albania, as a NATO member, should take "its share of responsibility" to protect Afghan citizens who feel threatened by the Taliban regime.
Mr. Rama told
VOA that Afghan refugees could stay in Albania for as long as they wish.
According to Mr. Rama, Afghan citizens who are in Albania will receive free health care, while a plan is being drafted to create a network of teachers who will be able to teach for the children of Afghan citizens who are sheltered in Albania.
Mr. Rama said the government he leads would not recognize the new Taliban government.
Albania was among the first countries to offer to host Afghan citizens who were forced to flee their country due to the Taliban threat. Albanian authorities said they were ready to house up to 4,000 people. Currently, so far, there are over 650 Afghan citizens who have arrived in Albania.
