Bute Biberaj speaking at a protest against violence |
It was Loudoun's prosecutor of Albanian origin, Buta Biberaj, who asked for help for her safety, saying that she received dozens of threatening phone calls.
Local media write that Biberaj is a first-generation Muslim immigrant. She has been portrayed by right-wing websites as an immigrant prosecutor who targeted the father of a school rape victim.
She has also been criticized by the Republican nominee for governor of Virginia, Glenn Youngkin, who said in a speech Tuesday that the Loudoun prosecutor's targeting the victim's relatives.
"I have received dozens of death threats specified against me. Most are done over the phone. I got a call on my personal number saying "We are coming b ** ". "I also received a threat in the office number and there was talk that they would kill me", she said.
Biberaj claims that death threats have increased significantly over the past three weeks.
"They have made such statements that I should not worry about looking back as they will come from the front," she said.
The prosecutor of Albanian origin believes that the callers intend to kill her. Authorities are investigating the case but do not say whether anyone has been arrested so far.
But, what is the reason for which the Albanian prosecutor "is crucified"?
It is about the arrest of the father of a rape victim in a school, who was handcuffed during the board meeting of the institution. But after a scuffle, the sheriff's office arrested him and not the prosecution.
The Albanian prosecutor said that the police were not aware that the detainee was the father of a rape victim when they arrested him. Biberaj added that her office did not intend to target the father, but has opened criminal proceedings following referrals made by the Sheriff. She added that his case is on appeal, while the father has said he will sue Loudoun County.
Biberaj is already scared for her life and is said to be considering hiring private guards. She has been hit hard by right-wing groups. Biberaj has also reacted harshly to the Republican candidate for governor.
