In Albania, the General Director of the State Police Ardi Veliu resigned today. The announcement was made by Prime Minister Edi Rama through a post on Twitter, while the news of his dismissal circulated in the media today.

Mr. Veliu was appointed head of the Albanian Police in February 2018, on the proposal of the then Minister of Interior Fatmir Xhafa. In the text of the resignation, published by Mr. Rama, he states that the decision to leave office after almost 4 years is related to the need "to be more dedicated to family and children" while calling the work during this period "challenging while managing complex situations from the fight against drug trafficking, organized and street crime, migrant flows or even often violent rallies ”.

Mr. Veliu has often been at the center of criticism, especially when serious criminal events have shaken the country. Yet he has always enjoyed the support of the government. Even today, Prime Minister Edi Rama spoke in a praiseworthy tone about him when he wrote that “with the highest consideration for the honesty, professionalism and special dedication of the General Director of the State Police, Ardi Veliu, and with the conviction that he still has much to give to the state in other tasks, I thank him from the bottom of my heart for his valuable contribution”.

For the opposition, on the contrary, “Ardi Veliu is neither the first nor the last police director to leave in shame during these 8 years, causing great damage to the country and its citizens. This story will be repeated as long as the chief of 'Ardiveli', Edi Rama, is the main partner of organized crime. Without the departure of Edi Rama, there will never be a serious fight against crime, honest police officers will continue to feel betrayed and demotivated, and serious criminal events will continue to shake our cities," said through a statement General Secretary of the Democratic Party Gazmend Bardhi.
