The population of Greece is shrinking by 500 thousand in 9 years, not even immigrants are enough

The population of Greece has been steadily declining since 2010 and according to current data, the population has shrunk to 450,000-500,000 over 9 years, writes Kathimerini.

During the last 9 years, respectively from 2011 to 2020, based on ELSTAT statistics, the Greek population decreased by 3.7% (-405,000-500,000.

But trends at the regional level are different. Most prefectures (39/51) recorded population declines and only a minority (12/51) recorded increases. According to the data, only four prefectures recorded a significant increase in their population: 3-6%.

The most endangered is the part of 'Mainland Greece' while the islands are expected to have population growth due to immigrants. As for the birth-death balance at the national level, according to data provided over 9 years, the figure remains at 223 thousand.

Immigrants can play a crucial role in population change. However, if the situation continues like this, after 20 years Greece will have one million fewer inhabitants compared to today.
