The Albanian surgeon in America, Rifat Latifi, will be the new Minister of Health in Kosovo.

The news was given by Prime Minister Albin Kurti through a press conference, who said that Latifi has come from the US to take the post of head of health, at this difficult time when the whole world is facing the coronavirus pandemic.

Latifi will replace Arben Vitina, who resigned from the ministry because he ran under the banner of the Vetëvendosje Movement for the municipality of Pristina, but the final results declared him a loser against LDK rival Përparim Rama.

Rifat Latifi was born in Klodernica, Skënderaj in 1955. In 1982, he completed his studies at the Faculty of Medicine in Prishtina and in the same year emigrated to the USA.

He began his specialization in surgery at the Cleveland Clinic, then continued his studies at Jela University, while completing his second specialization in general traumatology and resuscitation at the College of Medicine in New York.

He became a university professor after 5 years of completing his specialization and held many important academic and organizational positions in world medicine.

During his career, he has worked at renowned universities and hospital centers across America, such as Texas, Philadelphia, New York, Doha. He is currently Professor of Surgery and President of the American College of Surgeons for the State of Arizona.

Prof. Latifi has published several books on medicine (surgery, nutrition, laparoscopy, and telemedicine), and is the author of over 130 scientific articles. His contribution is great in establishing the telemedicine service in Kosovo and Albania.
