Kosovo police detained four Russian citizens on November 15 for "unauthorized crossing of the border, or borderline."

The announcement of the Kosovo Police states that the Russian citizens were detained near Leposavic while they were trying to illegally cross the border in a car.

Kosovo Police spokesman Daut Hoxha told Radio Free Europe that the suspects had used alternative routes to enter Kosovo illegally.

He did not give further details about the case but said that it is now a matter for the Prosecution, which is handling the case and has ordered that Russian citizens be sent to detention for 48 hours.

The police report states that it is about two men and two women.

On October 22, Kosovo ordered the expulsion of two Russian diplomats, accusing Moscow of "destabilizing" activities.

The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani had said that the country's institutions are determined in the fight against the malicious influence of Russia and its "satellites in the region", which, according to her, aim to undermine the achievements of Kosovo, the United States, NATO, and the European Union.

The Russian Embassy in Belgrade in response had said that "no decision of Pristina has legal force for Russia."

"We do not recognize the independence of Kosovo, therefore we do not recognize their Government or other structures. No decision of Pristina has legal force for us," said the Russian Embassy.

Russia opposes Kosovo's independence declared in 2008.
