Immigrants on the boat at the Greek coast in Aegean Sea |
At least 13 people lost their lives after a migrant boat capsized in the Aegean Sea late Friday, bringing to 27 the death toll over three days in several separate incidents in Greek waters.
Earlier, 11 people were confirmed dead after a sailboat hit a rocky island near Antikythera on Thursday. The Coast Guard said Friday that 90 people; 52 men, 11 women, and 27 children, were rescued after spending hours on the island, Euronews reports.
In another incident on Friday, Greek police arrested three people on smuggling charges and arrested 92 migrants after a yacht crashed in the southern Peloponnese region.
The latest incident came as smugglers began to increasingly favor a dangerous route from Turkey to Italy, which avoids the highly patrolled eastern Aegean islands, which for years were at the forefront of the country's migration crisis.
