The town of Castro in the province of Lecce |
In an Italian tourist town, where the Adriatic Sea meets the Ionian Sea and its impressive colors, former legends are taking the concrete form of historical evidence, local media reports.
Right in front of Albania, the town of Castro in the province of Lecce is bringing for several years clearer evidence of an early, and so far mythical civilization, whose signs have resisted for millennia, which is associated with the Trojan hero Enea.
Butrint Amphitheater |
From the stories of classic authors like Virgil, it is said that the Trojan prince Ene Ankiziadi or known in English as Aeneas, escaped the destruction of his city by the Greeks by traveling to the Mediterranean in search of long-term shelter. During the voyage, Aeneas stopped at present-day Butrint in Albania, and then headed for the Italian coast, before ending up at Cartagena.

The town is located opposite the Albanian coast, where the Adriatic Sea meets the Ionian Sea and its impressive colors.

To date, the first place he had stopped in Italy was merely a hypothesis, and was described as a "port dominated by a cape, where in May was the temple of Minerva."
Today the ruins of that temple seem to be coming to light precisely in the town of Castro.
He gave the "seal", beyond the various artifacts, precisely the finding of the giant statue of the pagan goddess, dressed not like the Greek Athena but as the variant found in the mythical Troy.
Numerous finds are being highly valued by Italian archaeologists, as one of the most important of recent decades.
The oldest walls seem to belong to the Bronze Age, with strata dating back to the 4th-century b.c.
Only a small portion has been excavated, while the rest has already been covered by the current city.
