The Prime Minister of Slovenia, Janez Jansa, at the end of the EU presidency, says that the union is being opportunistic when it comes to the Western Balkans.

According to him, one of the EU leaders during a debate has openly expressed reservations about the membership of the region in the EU.

He stressed that the nationalist interest, according to him is an obstacle to the vision of a united and free Europe.

In an interview with local media, he said that his country managed to change the term from a "European perspective" to a "membership perspective" for the Western Balkan countries.

"One of the strategic successes is that we have brought enlargement back to the table as a strategic issue for the EU," he said.

According to Jensa, the EU must clearly show that it must expand in the Balkans, especially seeing of what it is happening in the East.

"We have to leave behind the illusion that things can be resolved on their own. If the EU does not expand, then someone else will act...," said the Slovenian prime minister.
