Oil extraction machinery working in Dumre |
The Italian company ENI, which has a hydrocarbon agreement with the Albanian government for the Dumre oil field, will conduct a geophysical survey this year.
The decision on the environmental declaration has already been passed to the National Environmental Agency, thus paving the way for other procedures of the company. The start of the geophysical survey that will take place throughout this year was announced earlier in some company documents submitted to the authorities, local media reports.
In the same documents earlier it was underlined that geophysical observations are widely used all over the world to obtain a detailed view of the geological structure below the earth's surface. The purpose of the proposed geophysical survey will be used by the Project Proponent to assess the hydrocarbon potential in the surveyed area and to be informed of possible survey locations for exploratory drilling activities. However, it may take several years before ENI fully understands the possible presence of hydrocarbons in this part of Albania and to decide whether hydrocarbons can be produced," the company said.
The exploration method will be the 2D, commonly used for regional hydrocarbon exploration.
The project area is located in the Dumrea region, on land, in central Albania, about 40 km south of the capital, Tirana, in a hydrocarbon area previously explored and tested. The Dumre oil field occupies an area of 587 km2.
The government, which had long been interested in free oil blocks, managed to sign an agreement with the Italian company ENI with new conditions under the new framework different from the existing ones and where Albania is expected to benefit more. This means that in case of oil discovery and production start, our country benefits from the first barrel and does not wait for the investment to be issued by the company.
