Negative population growth in Albania for the first time in 98-years, 3296 deaths more than births

 For the first time since 1923 when the population of Albania began to be counted, suffered a natural increase in 2021 according to official data because deaths were higher than births.

By 2021, 27,284 babies were born, marking a decrease of 2.8%, compared to the previous year. In 2021, 30,580 people lost their lives, marking an increase of 10.8%, compared to a year ago. The natural increase of the population in the fourth quarter of 2021 shows that there are 898 deaths more than births. While throughout 2021 the natural increase was 3,296 deaths more than births. Albania has been characterized by positive natural supplements over the years. The negative natural increase for 2021 has also been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic situation.

Natural growth is falling

In the fourth quarter of 2021, five regions in Albania recorded a positive natural increase of the population, while in the other seven counties, the natural increase in the population was negative.

In the fourth quarter of 2021, the region with the highest natural increase is Tirana, with 460 births more than deaths, while the region with the lowest natural increase in Korça, with 349 deaths more than births.

Births, decreasing despite the bonus

In the fourth quarter of 2021, the region with the highest number of births is Tirana with 2,514 births, while the region with the lowest number is Gjirokastra with 113 births. The highest increase in the percentage of births during the fourth quarter of 2021, compared to the same period of 2020 is the region of Berat with 13.7%, while the largest decrease is in the region of Dibra with 15.7%.

During 2021, five counties of the country marked an increase in the number of births, compared to 2020, while the other seven counties declined.

During 2021, the region with the highest number of births is Tirana with 9,473 births, while the region with the lowest number is Gjirokastra with 451 births. The highest increase in the percentage of births during 2021, compared to 2020 is occupied by the region of Kukes with 3.9%, while the largest decrease has the region of Elbasan with 11.3%.

Deaths on record from pandemic

In the fourth quarter of 2021, eleven counties in the country recorded a decrease in the number of deaths, compared to the fourth quarter of 2020, while only one county recorded an increase compared to the same period.

In the fourth quarter of 2021, the region with the lowest number of deaths is Kukes with 166 deaths, while the region with the highest number is Tirana with 2,054 deaths. The largest decrease in the percentage of deaths during the fourth quarter of 2021, compared to the same period of 2020 is occupied by the region of Lezha with a decrease of 24.6%, while the largest increase is in the region of Vlora with 3.0%.

During 2021, the only region that marked a decrease in the number of deaths, compared to 2020, while the eleven other regions marked an increase compared to the same period. By 2021, the region with the lowest number of deaths is Kukes with 612 deaths, while the region with the highest number is Tirana with 7,831 deaths. The largest decrease in the percentage of deaths during 2021, compared to 2020 is occupied by the region of Kukes with a decrease of 2.4%, while the largest increase is in the region of Vlora with 33.2%.
