Sali Berisha has been announced the new chairman of the Democratic Party, after the completion of the process of "re-establishment" of this political force.
Berisha has won deeply over the only candidate in the elections for chairman of the Democratic Party, Ibsen Elezi, in a smooth process without incidents.
Since resigning nine years ago, Berisha is now returning to the helm of the Democratic Party, at a time when he finds this political force divided.
Supporters of former DP chairman Lulzim Basha and a significant group of Democrat MPs have boycotted the entire "re-establishment" process without even recognizing the Assembly and the party's new statute.
The fate of the country's largest opposition political force, however, remains with the Tirana Court, a process that has also been accompanied by numerous controversies.
While Berisha has not taken into account the warnings received by the US and recently from Germany, with his return, international partners will terminate cooperation with the DP, and in the long run, this can maybe be translated into a terrorist organization.
Berisha's return to the helm of the Democratic Party comes just four days after an anniversary of his and his family being declared "non-grata" by the US State Department on serious charges of mass corruption and obstruction of justice.
But beyond the enthusiasm of Sali Berisha, who comes to the helm of the Democratic Party after a 9-year break, the Court will be the one to say the last word! This is because the statute of the Democratic Party is on Appeal and the final decision is awaited. If Judge Blerina Muça will uphold the decision of Agron Zhukri, then he will be the legitimate chairman of the Democratic Party, otherwise, if the decision of that judge without vetting is rejected, Berisha will be elected by a party who called them himself.
Berisha started his battle to take over the leadership of the party he founded after Lulzim Basha expelled him from the Democratic parliamentary group because he was declared ‘Non-Grata’ by the US for corruption and undermining democracy. As of September 9, 2021, Berisha launched a campaign against Lulzim Basha, causing the latter to resign, while the D.P. entered a crisis from which it has not yet emerged.
