Exiting the pandemic has further increased the monetary wealth of the largest depositors in the Albanian banking sector.
According to data from the Bank of Albania, at the end of 2021, the ten largest depositors at the end of the year owned 6.8% of total bank deposits, from 5.2% which had been this indicator a year earlier, at least according to this report according to local media.
The same trend is observed for other groups of large depositors. The 20 largest depositors at the end of last year owned 9% of deposits, compared to 7.19% in 2020.
While the 50 largest depositors held 12.2% of the total, from 10.42% they had a year ago.
The share of the largest depositors is monitored and reported by the Bank of Albania for the purpose of monitoring the concentration of bank deposits. It should not necessarily be understood as the list of individuals who have more money in the bank, because it also includes companies.
Last year, bank deposits grew at the highest rates in the last decade. According to the Bank of Albania, at the end of 2021 they had a value of 1.43 trillion, 10.9% more compared to a year ago. On this basis, the value of money owed by the largest depositors of the system can be calculated approximately.
6.8% of total deposits at the end of 2021 would translate into a value of about 97.3 billion or about 810 million in the accounts of 10 depositors.
At the end of 2020, deposits owned by the 10 largest depositors had been about 67 billion. This shows that in absolute terms the balance of deposits of the 10 largest depositors increased by 45% last year.
The value of bank deposits of the 20 largest depositors at the end of 2021 was estimated at approximately 128.8 billion, an increase of 38.5% compared to a year earlier.
For the 50 largest depositors, the value of total bank deposits is estimated at around 174.6, up 29.3% compared to a year ago.
These figures show that the richest have continued to increase their share of assets held in the form of money in the banking sector.
