The locust colony has invaded the planted and barren fields in Myzeqe. Dozens of hectares have been infected by this crop pest.

This is the farmer, Elidjon Gega from the commune of Dërmënas from Fier who is trying to collect what is left of his alfalfa.

He says the locust is turning three weeks old since the first invasion of agricultural lands.

"The locust has been down for three weeks. Measures must be taken, it has damaged all the alfalfa. We asked for help and no one sprayed." he says to Euronews Albania.

Another farmer from the village of Seman in Fier claims that the Insect is advancing every day towards the lands inside the villages.

"It has reached close to our plots, but it has not yet came here, as in other years. From other years it has damaged us a lot, but the lands must be disinfected so that I do not get there because it was able to get inside the plots, it does great damage" he said.

"The competent bodies have also been informed. It is mostly the object of the Vlora Directorate, the Inspectorates, but also we, on our part, have received the information and invited the farmers not to wait for help but to start fighting it in the plots" he declares.

There are more than 70 hectares infected to date by locusts in the area of Myzeqe. The trend is growing. Although sometimes the problem has become evident, the infection has survived, and as soon as the hot season strikes the insects revive.
