32 archaeological excavations in Albania from North to South

Since April, several archaeological excavations have started in Albania and many more are expected to start and will be completed by October.

There are 32 archaeological projects planned for this year, not only in well-known sites, such as Butrint, and Durrës but also in other places of archaeological potential.

From April to this moment, several types of research related to prehistory and antiquity have been closed.

"We have continued with research in the field of antiquity in Bushat, the research in the basilica of Elbasan has been closed, we have closed the research in Finiq", said the Director of the Institute of Archaeology, Belisa Muka.

Rovena Kurti, head of the Department of Prehistory, tells what they managed to find from the research they did in the Korça basin.

"We explored for the first time a hill settlement above the village of Barç, which is located very close to the city of Korçë. We found prehistoric pottery and pottery from later periods. We thought we were dealing with a tumular cemetery", she said.

These data are interesting as they shed light on the way of life in the Iron Age.

"The excavation so far is suggestive that we are dealing with an Iron Age dwelling. It would be a very important discovery for the Iron Age", according to her.

Work is currently underway on two archaeological sites and in each archaeological excavation, the Institute of Archeology collaborates with foreign experts.

"Currently it is our joint research with the University of Sapienza, we have started research in the Amphitheater of Durrës", emphasized Muka.

The archaeological excavations will start in Apolloni, the valley of Drinos, Butrint, and Drishti, and will extend to Shkodër and other places with archaeological data.
