A 35-year-old woman jumped yesterday afternoon from the second floor of the Saranda maternity hospital together with her newborn baby.
The director of the Saranda maternity hospital, Tajar Lako, told the media that the mother did not attempt to commit suicide, as the police initially reported, but tried to leave the hospital. He said that the 35-year-old woman had her sixth birth, but was in a street situation.
"Since the third day, seeing the condition of the mother who seems a little retarded, we could not find her husband because he did not come to the hospital, I told the nurses that if they saw her husband coming to the maternity hospital, he should contact me. The entire staff has been dedicated to the case with milk, and clothes for the baby, provided by the hospital. Since these are people who came to the city in the season to beg, then I could not take the child out of the maternity hospital because I did not know the living conditions and where to send the child. Under these conditions, I communicate with the director of the hospital and send a letter to the municipality to the social service office, even the head of human resources has spoken about the case and their answer was that their address was sometimes in Durrës, sometimes in Berat, in Gjirokastra and we were not sure where and were waiting to get an exact address where we could take them. This is because I couldn't take a two-three-day-old child out into the street with temperatures of 40 during the day or cold at night, since they don't have a home," says the director of the hospital, Euronews
reports.
Speaking about the state of health of the mother and the child, the director of the maternity hospital announced that the baby is in full health, while the mother, apart from some injuries, also has mental health problems.
