Map of the trail of the Adriatic-Ionian Corridor which passes through Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania and Greece |
The new highway that will connect Ioannina with the border point in Kakavija (Albania) is one of the road axes included in the plan of the Greek government until 2027 with a total budget of 240 million euros until the end of the year. This critical highway will serve critical sectors of the local and regional economy, including tourism and industry.
As it will connect Greece with the Western Balkans and the Adriatic Sea, the Blue Corridor will play a decisive role in stimulating regional trade and export activity. From Ioannina, Prime Minister Mitsotakis has stated that the highway that will connect Ioannina to Kakavia and further to the Western Balkans will be a modern, fast, safe road that has great national and geopolitical importance, in addition, to serve the people of Epirus.
The Ioannina-Kalpaki-Kakavia road axis will be a modern closed highway with a length of approximately 70 kilometers, with one and a half lanes for traffic in each direction without a dividing island. This new Ioannina-Kalpaki-Kakavia road axis will connect Greece with Albania as part of the "Blue Corridor", a road network of 1500 km.
The Blue Corridor project includes 8 countries: Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia. Construction projects in Croatia have made significant progress. It is expected that the Croatian part of the Blue Corridor will be delivered by the end of 2022.
