They provide shade, solace, and warmth. They bring joy to the heart and inspire artists and poets. Whether in the city, in the forest, at the edge of a field or high up in the mountains – without them, our life would not only be poorer but not possible at all.

They are troubled by climate change. In the Amazon ancient rainforests are clear-cut for the cultivation of soybeans as animal feed.

In Romania the Wood mafia is chopping down the last remaining European virgin forests, to be sold as kindling and timber at the home improvement store around the corner. And our customary monocultures of fast-growing conifers, combined with long periods of drought and increasingly warm winters, have shown themselves especially susceptible to pests.
