The US House of Representatives has approved a resolution regarding the case of the murder of the Bytyqi brothers - Ylli, Agron and Mehmet. The approval came a week after the American embassy in Belgrade called on Serbia to clarify the murder and hold responsible the perpetrators of the murder of the three Bytyqi brothers.

The three brothers, American citizens, left America in 1999 to become part of the fight for the Freedom of Kosovo. They traveled from the USA together with many other Albanian Americans organized under the name Atlantic Battalion to become part of the KLA.

The resolution demands that the Serbian authorities bring to justice those responsible for the murder of the Bytyqi brothers as soon as possible.

"The Government of Serbia and its relevant ministries and offices, including the Serbian War Crimes Prosecution, should make it a priority to investigate and prosecute as soon as possible current or former officials believed to be responsible for their death, directly or indirectly," the resolution states.

"Progress in solving this case or vice versa, should remain an important factor that determines the further development of relations between the United States and the Republic of Serbia", the resolution further states.

The resolution also recalls the promise of the president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, that the murderers of the brothers with American citizenship will be brought to justice.

The resolution states that the Serbian authorities, although they have investigated the case, have never charged the people who were part of the chain of command of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in relation to this crime, including the former Minister of Internal Affairs, Vllajko Stojilkovic, the assistant minister and the head of the Department of Public Security, Vlastimir Gjordjević and the commander of the police operational training camp, Goran Radosavljević – Guri.

The three Bytyqi brothers were arrested in July 1999, after the end of the war in Kosovo, because they had mistakenly crossed the border and entered the territory of Serbia. After serving their sentence for misdemeanors, they were picked up by a special police unit and executed by a firing squad. Their bodies were found in a mass grave, in the training ground of the special police in Petrovo Selo.
