Elina Xhengo: many negative messages from the Greeks because I am of Albanian origin!

Elina Xhengo, European champion in javelin throwing, a 20-year-old girl born to Albanian parents, has not fully enjoyed the success of the European from Munich.

Even though she represented Greece and even waved the flag of the neighboring country in European where she also set a continental record as the youngest girl to win a title in this discipline, there has been no shortage of insulting racist messages because of her origin.

"I received negative messages because I am originally from Albania", Elina emphasizes in an interview for the national television ANT1.

"I made the first phone call to my parents because they believed a lot and expected this success. They feel the stress of my competitions and want to take it away from me", adds Elina.

In the following, she underlines that only in the last few months she was provided with a Greek passport and she did not know if she would participate in the European, but despite this fact, she did not stop training. Asked by journalists about racism, she states:

"In the village where we live, I haven't felt the racism because people treat us very well. I have socialized quite well with all the residents there. After the race, I received many negative messages because I am of Albanian origin. My parents were very angry with the fact that I was not able to compete at the international level due to the lack of a passport."
