Montenegro declared three days of national mourning on Saturday, a day after 10 people, including two children, were killed when a 34-year-old gunman opened fire. From the preliminary investigations, the police say that the perpetrator of the attack had recently shown a "change in behavior".

Vuk Borilović used a hunting gun to first shoot dead two children, aged 8 and 11, and their mother. The latter lived as a tenant in his house in the city of Cetinje.

Then the 34-year-old man went out on the street and shot without reason at 13 other people. Seven of them lost their lives. The gunman was later shot dead after a standoff with police.

The authorities are still investigating, while people close to the attacker said that he had recently started to show a "change in behavior, but they had not seen signs that he could commit such a crime".

According to them, the 34-year-old had an appointment with a mental health specialist.

The police statement states that law enforcement officers sent to the scene were attacked by the 34-year-old man and then retaliated by shooting at him at least 20 times and seriously injuring him.

"It is still being investigated whether he died as a result of the serious injury (by the police) or from the bullets that came out of the gun of a local resident," the police statement said.

The prosecutor leading the investigation, Andrijana Nastic, told reporters on Friday that the gunman was killed by a bystander and that a police officer was among the wounded.

Witnesses of the attack from the great shock still cannot understand what happened. They speak of scenes of chaos and terror as the gunman opened fire on innocent people going about their daily business.

"Hear women crying, people screaming in the panic that a man has a gun and is shooting indiscriminately. I heard gunshots," says witness Milena Stanojevic.

Cetinja, a town of 17,000 inhabitants, is 36 kilometers west of Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro.
