The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, promised on Thursday in Tirana 80 million euros in aid to cope with the increase in the price of electricity as a result of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

She made the promise at a joint press conference with Prime Minister Edi Rama.

"Fortunately, Albania has no dependence on Russian gas at all, this is because of your dependence on the hydro system, but the impact also comes to Albania," said the EC president.

"We in the EU have decided that the only answer we can give is through unity and solidarity. It will be 80 million euros in grants," she added during the press conference.

Von der Leyen also added that Albania has a system to help families and small businesses while emphasizing that part of the grant of 500 million euros would be given to investing in energy infrastructure. She emphasized the importance of investing in renewable energy and mentioned the solar plant in Vaun e Deja as an example.

Prime Minister Rama appreciated the help of the European Union but considered it insufficient. According to Rama, it meets only 1/6 of the country's total expenditure to meet the demand for electricity.
