Kosovo will officially apply to start procedures for membership in the European Union this week. The confirmation was made by Prime Minister Albin Kurti himself, during a government meeting.

It is not known what its reaction of Brussels will be, but what is understood is that a long process is expected for Kosovo to receive the status of a candidate country for EU membership, local media report.

The greatest attention remains on the 5 member states that have yet to recognize Kosovo's independence. In order to advance on the path of EU integration, Brussels has made it clear to Pristina and Belgrade that they will have to normalize relations and end the dialogue with a final agreement.

At the government meeting, Kurti expressed his conviction that there will be rapid progress toward membership.
