In an interview for the Voice of America, the former special agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Coleen Rowley, talks about the case of the former senior counterintelligence officer of the FBI, Charles McGonigal, who was arrested by the American authorities under suspicions that he helped the Russian oligarch, Oleg Deripaska, in violation of American sanctions.
He is also suspected of having received money from a former employee of the Albanian intelligence services and for his connections with other officials in Albania.
According to former agent Rowley, Mr. McGonigal intended to get rich after his retirement by lobbying for foreign interests.
Former agent Rowly is a known whistleblower to the American public. In 2002, she testified before the Senate on the deep problems facing the FBI and intelligence agencies in general. Time magazine named her, along with two other whistleblowers, its 2002 Person of the Year for her testimony that the FBI had ignored information about the suspected activities of a person in Minnesota, where Ms. Rowly worked as an agent of the FBI. The person in question, Zacarias Moussaoui, was later one of the hijackers of the 9/11 attacks.
