The difficult childhood years of Eleni Foureira in Albania, due to the civil war

As the singer emphasized, "I came to Greece when I was 8 years old. I have "deleted" during bad times in my childhood, like the civil war. I remember being with mom at home one day and an alarm siren started going off. We woke up scared. But my mom reassured us. But for the next two months, we were constantly on the floor. My father, who was already in Greece to collect money, sent a taxi to bring us to Greece. My mom was alone with 4 minor children. My mom had a carbine and she used to go out and shoot the guns in the air to show that she has a gun so that we wouldn't be in danger."

Eleni Foureira adds, "Greece is my whole life, it is my homeland. The bread tasted different! And the guys who were bowling to me didn't know why they were doing it. At school, we were two foreign children from Albania. It was hard to understand why I was being fingered. It was hard to understand what racism was. I didn't know why it happens because. Albanians were not accepted by society then. When you are a child and you are not accepted by society because of your origin, you feel weak and you fear that you will not be given the opportunity. When I realized that people love Eleni, I felt the strength to say it".

Referring to her real name, she pointed out “my real name is Entela Fureraj. I got to the point where I was afraid to say where I was from in order to be accepted. Not everyone loves me, but I'm okay with that. I am loved by those who understand me. I am proud to be born in Albania, but Greece is my homeland, and I love it. It's the country I love."
