A mine-sweeping exercise that involved four NATO ships—two Turkish, one Italian, and one Dutch—off the Durres coastline has come to an end. The ships used the most recent military technology to scan the area, which is expected to see an increase in maritime traffic in the near future.

Using high-tech military equipment and divers at two locations that were deemed risky, the ships concentrated on the waters around Porto Romano, among other locations, local media report.

It was found that the area was clean. Local media reported that the findings would be given to Albanian authorities. There is a practical reason for the exercise because Porto Romano, which is currently home to an oil and gas terminal, is also going to be the location of Albania's new Durres Commercial Port. The old port will only be used for passenger and marina boats when it is redeveloped.

Since joining NATO in 2009, allied ships from various nations regularly dock in Albanian ports and off the coast of Albania.
