The Greek Ministry of Immigration and Asylum published data on the issuance of residence permits for foreign immigrants living in Greece, most of whom are immigrants from Albania.

According to official data in the month of December 2022, there are 285,842 thousand Albanian immigrants with residence permits in Greece, which make up about 60.5% of foreigners with a regular residence.

The number of Albanians with residence permits in December 2022 has a significant decrease of almost 150,000 people compared to December 2021 when, according to the data of the Greek Ministry of Immigration and Asylum, there were 435,642 thousand Albanian immigrants with residence permits in Greece, which accounted for 62.8 % of total foreigners with residence documents.

The significant drop in the number of Albanian immigrants with regular documents in Greece after one year is related, according to immigration analysts, to many factors, VOA reports.

The procedures for issuing new residence permits continue to move slowly, while a category of second-generation Albanian immigrants have obtained Greek citizenship in the last two years, no longer applying for residence permits.

But according to analysts, a major factor in the reduction of the number of Albanians in Greece is related to a dynamic movement of immigrants who worked and lived in Greece for years toward other European countries.

According to immigration analysts, the new emigration of second-generation Albanians is happening from Greece to countries such as England, Germany, the Netherlands and some of the countries of Northern Europe, after difficulties in Greece with employment and price increases.

Despite the significant drop, Albanian immigrants continue to lead in 2022 the number of foreigners with residence documents in Greece, followed by the Chinese, who have 22,951 residence permits, which constitute 4.9% of the total issued permits, and Georgians with 20,002 residence permits, which constitute 4.2% of the total number of residence permits.

According to official Greek data in 2020, citizens from Albania, China and Pakistan lead with the largest number of residence permits, while in 2021 citizens from Albania, Georgia and Pakistan topped the list of the main countries of foreign immigrants in Greece, equipped with residence permits.
