Artur Xhumari, head of the neurosurgery service at University Hospital Mother Teresa, said in an interview for "Good morning Albanians" in Euronews Albania that patients have more faith in foreign doctors than in Albanian ones.

"It gets complicated if I tell the patient you are going to be operated on and the neighbor tells him, listen, this is not a good thing, and trusts the neighbor more because he says it's normal, why should I be operated on," said the doctor while stressing that he has a big skepticism.

"There is some general mistrust about the Albanian doctors he said... The Albanian doctor does not know... and he or she will listen to the Turkish, Italian, or Greek doctor," he added.

According to Xhumari, the lack of exposure to doctors in the media is also a factor that affects mistrust.

We must emphasize that the public health sector in Albania is the most corrupt in Europe and at the local level after that of justice according to various surveys and studies. Recently, there has been a massive emigration of doctors to Western countries, where ironically many of them require reference letters or certificates of good behavior and professionalism at work to present to potential employers in the West.
