Today, he is a businessman in the United States; however, Beqir Potka made the decision to leave at the age of 23 in 1989, during the communist era.

Eris Rusi, a writer, is the author of the book titled "American Dream," which tells his story.

Beqir Potka talked about how he escaped and moved to the United States of America in an interview with Euronews Albania.

"On February 8, 1989, I got away. I had just turned 23. Since communism came to power, my family has been subjected to persecution. The brother of grandfather lived in the United States; he immigrated there around 1920. He worked and paid my grandfather's return to Albania with money. After the agrarian reform, they took our land after my grandfather invested it, purchased fertile land, and rented it out. When my father was detained while I was in the village, I was 7 years old. A cousin of mine and I were close, and after some time had passed, we both agreed that we needed to get out. On Grazhdan Mountain, we took the soldier with us and escaped knowing a soldier at the border. We ran out of everything in the mountains, including cookies, after three days. There were approximately 32 Albanians in all of Greece at the time, making our lack of knowledge of the language even worse when we entered the Hellenic land. The army questioned us. We were not tortured by them. I then submitted an application to enter the United States as a refugee. Beqir Potka stated, "The US embassy approved us to go to America as refugees 16 months after we stayed in Greece."
