A Serb is arrested, suspected of war crimes in Kosovo

 The Special Prosecutor's Office of Kosovo said that on March 7, Z.A., of Serbian nationality, was arrested, who is suspected of having committed war crimes against the civilian population in the Municipality of Kamenica, local media say.

According to the announcement, it is believed that in March 1999, at the police station in Kamenica, as an official, together with other Serbian policemen, first beat him "with rubber rods and kicks" and then tortured "in an inhumane manner" the victim with the initials B.M.

According to the Prosecutor's Office, the victim suffered serious injuries and his life was "seriously threatened" during the violence that reportedly lasted for an hour and a half.

Also, it is suspected that in the period February-March 1999, he took part in "the expulsion and violent displacement of the citizens of Kamenica and its surroundings, then he started looting houses, and then with the aim of damaging the property of Albanians, he set fire on many houses, as well as participated in the mistreatment of Albanian civilians".

According to the Special Prosecutor's Office of Kosovo, the arrested person allegedly committed the criminal offense of "war crimes against the civilian population".

In the war fought in Kosovo in 1998-99, more than 13,000 civilians were killed and thousands more disappeared.

Over 1,600 people are still missing - most of them Albanians.
