Arkan in the left with one of his colegues (archive) |
Evidence has been gathered in Serbia for the first time regarding the crimes committed by paramilitary groups during the former Yugoslavia. This includes the actions of Zeljko Raznatovic Arkan, a notorious figure in organized crime in Serbia who is known for his involvement in massacres in Bosnia, Croatia, and Kosovo.
Arkan was the leader of the Serbian Volunteer Guard and also one of the leaders of organized crime in Serbia during that time, with the support of Milosevic, Euronews
says.
His gangs, known as "Tigers," committed crimes in several countries, including participating in the Srebrenica genocide and massacring civilians in Kosovo. Jovana Kolavic has presented a file detailing most of the crimes involving the Serbian forces. According to her study, Arkan's units had approximately 4,000 members, some of whom were former convicts of serious crimes. The paramilitaries were supplied with weapons and military logistics by the Milosevic government, which gave them licenses to carry out crimes and sabotage operations. The crimes committed by the militia include the murder and rape of women in Bosnia. Although the Serbian institutions were informed about these crimes, no action was taken to stop them. To date, none of Arkan's members have been convicted of these crimes.
