Good news for Albanians and other qualified individuals from third countries! The Federal Department of Justice and Police (FDJP) has implemented a series of measures to ease administrative barriers and simplify the authorization process for working in Switzerland. The measures were announced in a meeting held on April 5th, 2023, and aim to increase the number of qualified foreign workers in Switzerland. The country is currently experiencing a shortage of labor in various sectors, with a reported 114,000 job vacancies available, according to Albanian media in Switzerland.

Qualified workers from third countries may be authorized to engage in gainful employment in Switzerland if it serves the country's economic interests and satisfies a need. The new measures will eliminate administrative barriers, streamline procedures, and increase legal security for companies.

Moreover, the authorities responsible for the labor market and migration may now take into account the situation of companies looking to recruit in professionals with a shortage of qualified workers. For these professions, the requirements for professional qualifications and the evidence that recruitment was not possible in Switzerland may be more flexible.

The FDJP has adapted the directives relating to the law on foreigners and integration (LEI) and now allows the cantons to authorize a simplified transition from a paid activity to self-employment for foreigners already in Switzerland and holding a residence permit.

However, the quotas system remains unchanged, and the cantons object to the imposition of an additional tariff for the accelerated examination of a work permit application. Therefore, the Federal Council has abandoned the proposal, and the cantons and the FDJP will exchange the best practices concerning processing times and procedures.
