"Disinformation and fake news pose a serious risk to the security of North Macedonia. They are one of the main factors that cause polarization, division, and conflicts in society," says Petrit Saraçini, director of the Institute for Media and Analysis in Skopje, who monitors written, electronic, and social media in accordance with professional standards, in an interview with Radio Free Europe.

Saraçini says that the disinformation that has gained ground in North Macedonia has its origins in Russia and China, but also in Serbia, and mainly concerns the protection of Russian aggression in Ukraine, and the presentation of the EU and NATO as institutions that do not respect human rights and family values.

Among other things, he says that "in the fight against disinformation, media literacy also plays an important role, which should be developed even more in schools." According to him, the media should take more responsibility in the fight against disinformation, as they also endanger their own existence." Radio Free Europe reports.

Petrit Saraçini is a very active journalist of Albanian origin in North Macedonia.
