Albanian families allocate a significant portion of their expenses towards food, indicating extreme poverty. Compared to European countries, grocery expenses in Albania are several times higher.

Albanian families spend more than families living in another European country.

By cross-referencing income per capita, gross domestic product, and market prices, grocery expenses in our country reach 31% compared to the European Union's average of 6.6%. This percentage is evidence of high poverty levels that surpass even the countries in the region.

For bread and cereals, Albanian families spend 4.3% of GDP, compared to the European average of 1.2%. Similarly, 6% of the income circulating in the economy is spent on meat in a year.

The same expenditure level applies to dairy products, accounting for 5.1% of Albania's national production, compared to 1% in Europe.

According to Eurostat, nominal expenditure on food per capita in 2022 was 2,000 euros, up from 1,700 euros in 2021, with a narrow difference compared to the European Union average of 2,300 euros.
