The high volcanic activity of Mount Etna in Sicily has led the management company of Catania Airport to announce the suspension of morning operations until midday today.

"Due to the eruptive activity of Mount Etna, the airspace sectors C1 and B3 will remain closed until 1:00 PM today. Therefore, all arrivals and departures are prohibited," the statement says.

The company has also requested passengers to only come to the airport after consulting with the airlines they have chosen to fly with.

The heightened volcanic activity was reported since last night. It was recorded by the Etna Observatory of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, which reported an explosive cloud heading south.

From a seismic perspective, starting from 6:00 PM, the average amplitude of volcanic tremors has shown a rapid increase and, after about twenty minutes, reached high levels that have raised concerns for the island.
