Greek Foreign Minister, Giorgos Gerapetritis, has stated that if Fredi Beleri is removed from the position of mayor of Himara, then the relations between the two countries will deteriorate. In an interview with ERT, Gerapetritis said, "The decision to keep Beleri in prison will impact Albania's path towards European Union."

"The dismissal of the Greek expatriate from his office would imply a serious worsening of Greek-Albanian relations. The process of Albania's accession to the EU cannot continue when there is such a violation of the rule of law and the presumption of Fredi Beleri's innocence," Gerapetritis concluded.

At the beginning of the month, SPAK sent the case against the elected mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleri, to trial. In the announcement, SPAK argued that from the evidence collected during the investigation, it is proven that Alfred Beleri offered Arsen Rama 50 euros for each person he would find and who would vote for Beleri as the candidate for the mayor of Himara in the local elections on May 14th. Arsen Rama would be rewarded with a sum of 300 euros for the service he would provide.

He is currently in prison and has not yet taken the oath as the mayor of Himara.
