At least 37 cases were captured at border crossing points during 2022 regarding the non-declaration of sums of money carried.

According to the law, all individuals entering or leaving Albanian territory are required to declare amounts in cash, precious metals or stones, valuable goods and antique objects, starting from the amount of 10,000 euros or its equivalent in other currencies, indicating their purpose of possession, as well as to provide relevant supporting documents, Monitor reports.

In fact, inspections have shown that several dozens of cases did not fulfill this requirement. The publication of the Customs Green Book for the year 2022 reveals that the attempted amounts to be passed through border points were 165,000 pounds, 1.3 million euros, and 1.85 million lek.

"In 2022, during the checks carried out by the Customs Administration at Border Crossing Points, a total of 37 cases of captures/non-declarations of monetary values were identified. Of these, the largest number was carried out at the International Airport "Mother Teresa" (14 cases), with amounts ranging on average from 14,000 GBP to 25,000 EUR. The highest number of cases for the year 2022 represent the captures at the entry of the P.K.K. with 28 cases, and the captures at the exit with 9 cases," says the annual Customs publication.

If we look at the categories separately, attempts to cross from customs points to airports were made in 14 captured cases, from border points to sea ports in 6 cases, and from land border points in 17 cases.

The Green Book also reveals cases of illicit trafficking where in 2022, 139 kilograms of cocaine, 193 kilograms of cannabis, 2 firearms, and 625 rounds of ammunition were identified.

"As a result of increased controls aimed at preventing, detecting, and targeting drug trafficking, based on risk analysis, at the port of Durres, 3 captures of cocaine originating from South America were made. At the border crossing points of Rinas and Kakavija, 2 firearms and 625 rounds of ammunition were discovered and seized during second-line inspections," the document states.
