During a period of tension with the Young Turks and the revolts of the Albanian people, Sultan Mehmed V and his children were compelled to visit the Albanian lands under Ottoman rule. They were forced to engage in diplomacy, as in the case of this photo, in an attempt to quell the Albanian people's rebellion. However, their efforts were unsuccessful and marked the eventual downfall of the Ottoman Empire.

Mehmed V Reşâd was the penultimate sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1909 to 1918. Mehmed V reigned as a constitutional monarch, interfering little when it came to government affairs, though the constitution was held with little respect by his government.
