On the left Fredi Beleri who is in prison for buying votes and on his left Kyriakos Mitsotakis, in Albania, Himara (archive) |
Albanian researcher Agron Alibali stated in an interview with
Euronews Albania that the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, interfered in the Himara elections, where Fredi Beleri was elected as the mayor, who is now in prison for vote-buying.
According to him, it is absurd for Mitsotakis' advisors to claim that the Prime Minister or the Albanian President should, in a democratic era, call the judicial authorities to intervene in the decision concerning Beleri.
"It is up to Mr. Mitsotakis, who is a very respected leader and a modern politician with a vision, to advise his advisors to withdraw from this pressure, from this fruitless diplomatic offensive against Albania and to let this matter be resolved through the legal mechanisms in Albania. On the other hand, it would be much more reasonable, even an extraordinary contribution to de-escalating the artificial situation and strengthening Albania-Greece relations if the person in question, Mr. Beleri, withdraws from the race at this moment and clarifies this matter once and for all so that later, when the opportunities arise, he can run like all the citizens of the Republic of Albania, as granted by the Constitution and the electoral law, until this issue is resolved," - Alibali stated.
