During an interview for "Balkan Update," analyst Xhelal Neziri commented on the proposal by the leader of the BDI (Democratic Union for Integration) in North Macedonia, Ali Ahmeti, to create a European front that would include Albanian parties as well as the Social Democratic Union, one of the largest Macedonian parties.
When asked about this proposal by journalist Linda Karadaku, the analyst emphasized that it is a possible and necessary coalition. According to him, this is a well-thought-out idea by Ahmeti that would keep North Macedonia on the path to European Union integration.
"We have a block of political parties that unequivocally state that we are ready to undertake any reform required to make the country part of the EU as soon as possible. However, based on the statements of the President of the European Council, Mr. Michel, and other diplomats, it is implied that membership in this year is possible. The first task is amending the Constitution and implementing the French proposal, which also includes Bulgarians in the Constitution. There are parties that unconditionally support constitutional changes, and there are parties that are not clear in this direction and say that they are for the EU but not for the French proposal.
Such an unclear stance by political parties opens a debate about whether this block is indeed in favor of EU membership, whether this block genuinely aims for strategic membership, and whether it is genuinely for Western values. When we have such a division, I believe that such a coalition is possible and necessary, and there is a chance that pro-European forces in Macedonia would win another mandate to govern the country. Ahmeti's idea is a smart one that would keep the country on the path to European integration," concluded the analyst.
