Islam Alijaj is elected as a member of the Swiss Parliament

Bern, October 23, 2023 – A candidate of Albanian descent has been elected as a member of the Swiss Parliament.

Islam Alijaj, a candidate from the Social Democratic Party (SP), secured 95,054 votes in the elections for the Federal Parliament of Switzerland, held on Sunday.

This is the first time that an Albanian has become a member of the Swiss Federal Parliament, making it a historic event for the Albanian community in this country.


Approximately 30 Albanian candidates competed in the elections for the Swiss Federal Parliament, but according to current information, Alijaj is the only one among them who has garnered enough votes to become a federal member of parliament.

Islam Alijaj, who has special needs, is well-known for his tireless dedication to the rights of the citizen category to which he belongs.

Up until now, he has been a highly active member of the Zurich City Assembly.
