The Constitutional Court has suspended the law for medical students, which obliges them to work for 5 years in Albania after completing their studies, or else students who refuse this law must pay 2300 euros per year.

The case was brought to the Constitutional Court by a group of medical students as well as by 30 opposition deputies.

The judges gathered this Tuesday, deciding to review the case fundamentally. A full decision will be made later on whether the law will remain in force or be overturned. The suspension is in effect until the court expresses its opinion on the law as a whole.

On July 21, the Parliament approved with 71 votes in favor, 23 against, and no abstentions the draft law for medical students.

This law was strongly opposed by the students, who for about 3 weeks held several protests, demanding that it not pass in parliament and provide them with more opportunities and conditions to work willingly in the country.

At the end of last month, medical students addressed a request to the rector of UMT, Arben Gjata, to have the support of the University for their protest and the ongoing boycott for three weeks. After receiving a positive response, they returned to the classrooms, ending the boycotts and marches.

In addition to the suspension, the students have demanded the repeal of the law.
