Ismail Qemali Way, Staten Island, New York |
On June 3, 2023, the Albanian community in Staten Island, New York, celebrated the naming of "Ismail Qemali Road." This marked a historic moment honoring one of the prominent leaders of the Albanian National Movement and the first President of the Albanian state. The naming of Ismail Qemali Road in Staten Island not only commemorated a distinguished figure but also signaled a significant success for the Albanian community in New York.
The journey to witness the unveiling of Ismail Qemali Road took us on a boat ride over the Hudson River, despite the rainy weather. The trip proved enjoyable and intriguing, offering a close view of the Statue of Liberty not far from Manhattan. Waiting for us on the other side was patriot and Chairman of the Albanian-American Association "Staten Island," Naser Nika, one of the key organizers behind naming the road after the signer of Albania's Independence, Ismail Qemali. Mr. Nika highlighted the special contributions of Shpëtim Qorraj, son of Kosovo's martyr Mustafë Qorraj, and Dr. Bahri Ceka to this significant initiative.
During the ceremony, notable figures such as New York City Mayor Eric Adams, Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis, Assembly members Samuel Pirozzolo, David Carr, and others were present, as mentioned by Mr. Nika, an indefatigable community activist. Looking ahead, Naser Nika announced that in June 2024, another road on Staten Island would be named after the Hero of the People, "Isa Boletini," who, despite severe illness, fulfilled his promise to the Wise Old Man, leading 400 fighters to Vlorë to witness the Declaration of Independence of Albania. Reflecting on the naming of Ismail Qemali Road and the upcoming dedication to Isa Boletini, Mr. Nika emphasized the positive collaboration with Dr. Bahri Ceka, members of the Albanian-American Association in Staten Island, and the support from local politicians.
The naming of "Ismail Qemali Road" follows the trend of several other roads in the United States, such as "Mother Teresa," "Skanderbeg," and "Fan Noli," all undertaken with the care and interest of successful representatives of our community, in collaboration with leaders in American politics. These individuals, through their achievements in various aspects of life, dedication, and time invested in social interactions among communities, have created a notably positive image in the political and decision-making arena in America.
As a diaspora, we should take pride in these good-hearted and patriotic individuals who dedicate their precious time for the benefit of both the Albanian national cause and the American people. Simultaneously, we express gratitude to the United States for historically welcoming, supporting, and appreciating the Albanian people, from the time of President Woodrow Wilson, President Clinton, President Bush, President Obama, and beyond. Notable moments include the overthrow of the harsh communist dictatorship in Albania and the independence of Kosovo, showcasing the enduring bond between the Albanian people and the United States.
