The Council of Mandates decided today in favor of the request by SPAK (Special Prosecution Office against Corruption and Organized Crime) to lift the immunity of Sali Berisha. SPAK's request was approved by 5 "pro" votes from the majority, to which Enkelejd Alibeaj's approval on behalf of the Democratic Party was added, this is what Albanian media report these days.
Thus, the Council of Mandates unanimously voted to strip Sali Berisha of the immunity that protects his parliamentary mandate, making him available to the judiciary.
Now, after today's session, a vote will be held in the Parliament during Thursday's session, where we will also see how the Democrats will vote.
This vote may pave the way for the Special Structure to impose another security measure on former Prime Minister Sali Berisha.
For the head of the "Re-establishment," SPAK has requested a change in the measure from "obligation to appear" to "arrest in prison" or "house arrest."
Earlier during the session, Enkelejd Alibeaj declared his "pro" vote on behalf of the Democratic Party, arguing that this has been the standard held by the right since the beginning. Alibeaj also urged SPAK not to play with double standards and to consider the charges made on behalf of Edi Rama.
